In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Seige Tale : 1.5/5

Terrible movie.  I only checked it out of the library because Jason Statham's in the movie and I wanted something relatively brainless.  This was way too brainless.  Lots of boring, too long fight scenes too.  I can't believe so many recognizable actors/actresses signed up for this terrible knock-off of Lord of the Rings.

Quantum of Solace : 2.5/5

Ah Flicks.  I haven't been to Flicks for years.  Now it is free, but the sound and projection quality seems to have deteriorated significantly.  No more cartoons at the start, and since there was only one 8pm showing, there was no heckling or the throwing of paper.  Maybe that doesn't happen anymore even at the 10pm showings?

Quantum of Solace was entertaining, but very forgettable.  I didn't like how the action scenes were edited because you can barely tell who's who and what's happening.  Why blow the huge budget on action scenes that can't be easily followed?

To the Limit : 3/5

Interesting documentary about the Huber brothers, Thomas and Alexander, and their attempts to break the speed climbing record of El Capitan in Yosemite.  There's some emo stuff about their sibling rivalry - Thomas's envy of the media interest on the arguably more good-looking and better climber, Alexander.  It also shows a little of their expedition to Patagonia to climb the Torre Traverse (I think?).  Dean Porter and Chongo were also interviewed, but weirdly, they weren't identified in the movie other than during the credits.  I wished also that they gave more background on the Huber brothers - what do they do outside of climbing?

I don't really know that much about climbing, but I have to admit I was most excited about seeing Patagonia.  The short bits in the movie of the little town of El Chaltén brought back good memories from our hiking vacation there several years ago.

War : 3/5

Hmmm...Jason Statham and Jet Li in the same movie.  Sounds like it would be a mindless action movie, and it met expectations.  I was entertained.

Wordplay : 3.5/5

Enjoyable documentary about the world of crossword puzzles.  I liked the insight to how these puzzles were created and the interviews with the crossword geniuses and famous people who do crosswords.  Like Spellbound, a documentary about spelling bees, this documentary ends with the crossword puzzle competition.  I did get a strong urge to go do puzzles after watching the documentary.  The bonus stuff in the DVD were quite good too.

Man on Wire : 4/5

Fascinating documentary about Philippe Petit's tight wire walking across the twin towers of World Trade Center in Aug 1974.  The documentary consisted of interviews with Petit and his conspirators, reenactments and actual footage as well as still photos.  It is put together almost like a heist movie, and was compelling throughout.

World Trade Center : 3.5/5

That was a hard movie to watch.  I don't know why we put that on our netflix list - but I guess after Wanted, (which Eu-Jin thoroughly enjoyed but I didn't bother to sit through) we wanted something different.

I am not sure if it is ever possible to make movie about 9-11 without causing discomfort of some sort.  It was a good and compelling movie, regardless of any controversy about the accuracy of the portrayals or depiction of the rescue.  It is hard to make a "true story" movie.  Inevitably there would be liberties taken or perhaps shoddy research done, and consequently, some people involved would be upset.

Eagle Eye : 1.5/5

This was a dumb movie.  Made very little sense, and was entirely preposterous.  It was marginally watchable only because I was stuck in a plane, and I did not really want to watch the second sequel to The Mummy.

Ghost Town : 3/5

This movie was better than I thought it would be.  That's probably because of Ricky Gervais.  His acting as the rather unpleasant dentist was more amusing than I thought it would be.  And there was strong comedic chemistry between the three leads - Gervais, Tea Leoni and Greg Kinnear.  Otherwise, it is a mostly just a frothy romantic comedy.

City of Ember : 3.5/5

Enjoyable family-adventure movie.  The story moves along a fast clip.  And the kids were engaging.  Bill Murray was also excellent in the supporting role as the slimy mayor of the city.  I love the atmospheric sets of the city.  How would a city deep underground, and dependent on generator and food stores from more than 200 years ago look like? Good movie to watch on a long flight.
